The Original Katy Townsite
The boundaries are not officially defined, but the area is commonly understood to run north of Interstate 10, south of Morton Road, west of the Grand Parkway and east of Cane Island Parkway. J.O. Thomas, L.C. Luckel and R.M. Cash platted the townsite in 1895 along the M-K-T Railroad, and the town was rebuilt after the 1900 hurricane that destroyed most of its buildings.
Residents here live inside the City of Katy, so city departments handle services such as water, sewer and trash, and your account shows exactly who serves your address. A historical marker program from 1986 covers more than a dozen homes and buildings downtown.

A Different House on Every Block
Housing in the area includes Victorian-era homes, Craftsman bungalows from the 1920s and 1930s, post-war cottages, 1960s and 1970s ranch homes and newer custom houses built on vacant lots. A house from 1925 and one from 2022 can sit on the same street, and their plumbing will have little in common.
Older homes have usually been updated over the decades, so the materials behind the walls can vary from one house to the next and even from one room to the next. A plumber should identify what is actually in place before recommending a repair or a replacement.
Foundations, Pipes and What to Check
Some older houses are built on pier-and-beam foundations instead of slabs, which changes how a leak is found. Access under the floor can make a line easier to reach, but it also means a leak can go unseen for longer. Leak detection methods are chosen based on the foundation type.
If you are buying an older home here, a sewer camera inspection before closing is worth considering. It shows the condition of the line from the house to the connection, which helps you plan instead of being surprised later. Repairs and installations follow the Uniform Plumbing Code (UPC) as adopted in Texas.
First Steps in an Older House
Start by shutting off the water at the fixture's own valve, or at the main if you cannot find it. Older houses sometimes have stiff or corroded shutoff valves, so locate yours before you need it and turn it once to confirm it moves. Do not force a valve that will not turn, since a broken valve makes the problem worse.
Next, cut power at the breaker to any area with standing water and move belongings out of the wet zone. Take photos for insurance, then call. Describe what you see, what you shut off and how old the house is, and a plumber can arrive with the right parts.
